Interview With Ellen Hopkins Crank Trilogy For Teens

Ellen Hopkins is the best-selling author of the enormously popular Crank trilogy of young adult (YA) books. Although she was an established poet, journalist and freelance writer before the success of Crank, Hopkins is now an award-winning YA author with five bestselling novels in verse for teens. Her novels in verse attract many teen readers because of their realistic topics, authentic teen voice, and the appealing poetic format that is easy to read. Ms. Hopkins, a highly sought after speaker and writing mentor, took time out of her busy schedule to grant me an email interview. Read on to learn more about this talented writer including information about the writers and poets who influenced her, the inspiration behind her Crank trilogy, and her stand on censorship.  Ã‚  Q.   What types of books did you like to read as a teen?  Ã‚  A.  Ã‚  There was a total dearth of YA literature when I was a teen. I gravitated toward horror-- Stephen King, Dean Koontz. But I also loved popula r fiction--Mario Puzo, Ken Kesey, James Dickey, John Irving. For sure if I found an author I liked, I read everything by that author I could find.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q. You write poetry and prose.   Which poets/poems have influenced your writing?  Ã‚  A.   Billy Collins. Sharon Olds. Langston Hughes. T.S. Eliot  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   Most of your books are written in free verse. Why do you choose to write in this style?  Ã‚  A.   My books are completely character driven, and verse as a storytelling format  feels like a characters thoughts. It puts readers right on the page, inside my characters heads.  That makes my stories real, and as a contemporary storyteller, thats my goal.  Plus, I truly love the challenge of making every word count. I have, in fact, become an impatient reader. Too much extraneous language makes me want to close a book.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   Besides your books in verse, what other books have you written?  Ã‚  A.   I started writing as a free lance journalist, and some of the stories I wrote sparked my interest in nonfiction books for children. I published twenty before I moved into fiction. My first adult novel, Triangles, publishes October 2011, but that is also in verse.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   How would you describe yourself as a writer?  Ã‚  A.   Dedicated, focused and passionate about my writing. I am blessed to have a creative career that is relatively lucrative, too. I worked really hard to get here, and will never forget those days, trying to decide where I belonged as a writer and scraping by until I figured it out. Quite simply, I love what I do.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   Why do you like writing for teens?  Ã‚  A.   I very much respect this generation and hope my books speak to the place inside them that makes them want to be the best they can be. Teens are our future. I  want to help them create a brilliant one.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   Many teens read your books. How do you find your â€Å"teen voice† and why do you think you are able to connect with them?  Ã‚  A.   I have a fourteen-year-old son at home, so Im around teens through him and his friends. But I also spend a lot of time talking with them at events, signings, online, etc.  In fact, I hear teen every day.  And I remember being a teen. What it was like to still be a kid, with my inner adult screaming for freedom. Those were challenging years, and that hasnt changed for todays teens.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   You’ve written about some serious topics in regards to teens. If you were to give teens any advice about life, what would it be? What would you say to their parents?  Ã‚  A.   To teens: life will present you with choices. Think carefully before you make them. Most mistakes can be forgiven, but some choices have outcomes that cant be taken back. To parents: Dont underestimate your teens. They are wiser and more sophisticated than you know, even though their emotions are still developi ng. They see/hear/experience things you may not want them to. Talk to them. Arm them with knowledge and help them make the best choices they can.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   The book Crank is a fictionalized story based on your own daughter’s experience with drugs. How did  she influence  you to write Crank?  Ã‚  A.   This was my perfect A kid. No problems at all right up until the time she met the wrong guy, who turned her on to drugs. First, I needed to write the book to gain some understanding. It was a personal need that made me start the book. Through the writing process, I gained much insight and it became clear this was a story many people shared. I wanted readers to understand that addiction happens in good homes, too. If it could happen to my daughter, it could happen to anyones daughter. Or son or mother or brother or whatever.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   Glass and Fallout continue the story you started in Crank.   What influenced you to continue writing Krist ina’s story?  A.   I never planned sequels. But Crank resonated with so many, especially because I made it clear it was inspired by my familys story. They wanted to know what happened to Kristina. What most hoped for was that she quit and became the perfect young mom, but that wasnt what happened. I really wanted readers to understand the power of crystal meth, and hopefully influence them to stay far, far away from it.   For more information on Ellen Hopkins and the book challenges to Crank,   see the next page. Q. When did you find out Crank was being challenged?A. Which time? Its been challenged many times and was, in fact, the 4th most challenged book in 2010. Q. What was the reason given for the challenge?A. Reasons include: drugs, language, sexual contentQ. Were you surprised at the challenges? How did you feel about them?A. Actually, I find them ridiculous. Drugs? Uh, yeah. Its about how drugs take you down. Language? Really? The f-word is in there exactly twice, for specific reasons. Teens cuss. They do. They also have sex, especially when theyre using drugs. Crank is a cautionary tale, and the truth is the book changes lives for the better all the time. Q. How did you respond?A. When I hear about a challenge, its usually from a librarian who is fighting it. I send a file of reader letters thanking me for: 1. Letting them see the destructive path they were on, and encouraging them to change it. 2. Giving them insight into a loved-ones addiction. 3. Making them want to help troubled kids. etc. Q. In the nonfiction essay collection called Flirtin with the Monster, you stated in your introduction that you wanted to write Crank from Kristinas point of view. How difficult of a task was this and what do you feel you learned from it?A. The story was close behind us when I started Crank. It had been a six-year nightmare, fighting for her and with her. She was inside my head already, so writing from her POV [point of view] wasnt difficult. What I learned, and needed to learn, was that once the addiction kicked into high gear, it was the drug we were dealing with, not my daughter. The monster analogy is accurate. We were dealing with a monster in my daughters skin. Q. How do you determine which topics to write about in your books?A. I receive literally hundreds of messages a day from readers, and many are telling me personal stories. If a topic comes up many times, it means to me its worth exploration. I want to write where my readers live. I know, because I hear it from my readers.Q. Why do you think its important to read about the topics you cover in your books?A. These things--addiction, abuse, thoughts of suicide--touch lives every day, including young lives. Understanding the why of them can help change the horrific statistics that some people refuse to believe. Hiding your eyes wont make them go away. Helping people make better choices will. And its hugely important to gain empathy for those whose lives are touched by them. Its hugely important to give them a voice. To let them know they are not alone.Q. How has your life changed since publishing Crank?A. A lot. First of all, I discovered where I belong as a writer. Ive found a widening a udience that loves what I do, and through that Ive gained some small amount of fame and fortune. I never expected that, and it didnt happen overnight. Its a lot of hard work, both on the writing end and on the promotion end. I travel. Meet lots of great people. And while I love that, Ive come to appreciate home even more.Q. What are your plans for future writing projects?A. Ive recently moved onto the adult side of publishing, so Im currently writing two novels a year--one young adult and one adult, also in verse. So I plan to be very, very busy.Ellen Hopkins new novel in verse for teens, Perfect, will be released September 13, 2011.

Though this book starts with the opening line that indicates the birth of ancient civilization by mentioning â€Å"When Europeans reached present-day Latin America they found three important civilizations: Mayan, Aztec, and Incan† (Skidmore, 2000), it soon came to the focal point of the book that is the influence and impact of globalization and neo liberalism on Latin American population by even mentioning areas like the Brazilian soccer, Latino popular music and Cuban Santeria and their influence all over the world by the dint of globalization. However the book always tends to focus on the socio cultural transitions from fundamental cultural stability to the intricacy and complexities of modernization. We will write a custom essay sample on Modern Latin America or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is true that no socio cultural evaluation can be complete without the mention of political and economical significance on the population thus information regarding these are well updated with the mention of neo democratic movements that is fast becoming the basic milieu of the Latin American culture. Brave New World By Huxley Essays - Huxley Family,

Brave New World By Huxley Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World out of fear of society's apparent lack of morals and corrupt behaviour during the roaring twenties. Huxley believed that the future was doomed to a non-individualistic, conformist society, a society void of the family unit, religion and human emotions. Throughout the novel, Huxley predicts many events for the future, most of which concentrate on a morally corrupt society. The most important of these predictions include: greater sexual freedom, over-population, brain-washing/sleep-teaching, and the use of mind altering drugs. Aldous Huxley's Brave New World warns of a possible future dystopia, based on social attitudes and medical advancements of his time. Huxley's future dystopia is created largely by perverted sexual freedoms, which in turn cause corrupt individuals, entirely lacking ethics and morals. Sexual promiscuity appears to be a much more frequent activity now then it was in the Thirties. Critics blame "...the advent of the pill for declining morality and indiscriminate sexual activity." Many believe that each time medicine reduces the risk of unwanted diseases and pregnancies, society, on the whole, will increase its sexual activity. Huxley's prediction of promiscuity is based on his iron law of sexuality: "As political and economic freedom diminishes, sexual freedom tends compensatingly to increase." A current example of Huxley's belief is China. China is the last remaining communist regime, it also suffers from having one fifth of the world's population within its borders. Needless to say, China's large population is a direct result of a very sexually active society. Aldous Huxley's fears of the future caused him to write about sexual freedom and the resulting over-population in Brave New World. Over-population is another problem which is addressed by Huxley, and is the direct result of sexual freedom. The fear which Huxley addresses concerning population control is: "Food supplies cannot grow as fast as people can, and population growth in underdeveloped countries will jeopardize the world order." Simply stated the growing population of earth will consume more than it will be able to produce, unless some form of regulating births can be created. This is an obvious truth today, as millions of people are starving each day. The brave new world that Huxley speaks of, is a warning to mankind concerning its destruction of the laws of nature. For example, marriage is forbidden, as well as, pregnancies, and mothers are non-existent because possible children result in abortion. In Brave New World over-population is solved by society's ability to produce as many or as few humans as are necessary to keep the population at equilibrium. The solution is test-tube babies or "bottled babies" as they are referred to in the book. Effective birth control of such a large population is difficult to achieve, especially in a society where people are encouraged to be sexually active with numerous partners. Today, the world is facing over-population head on, with mixed results. Abortions are not readily accepted by most, and birth control in third world countries is virtually impossible. Huxley realizes the problem with mass birth control, and solves it by making seventy percent of the female population sterile, while only thirty percent of the women remain fertile. By leaving thirty percent of the women fertile, Huxley is able to show that even though birth control on a large scale is difficult, it is possible to achieve. Through the religious use of contraceptives, pregnancies rarely occur, however, when a pregnancy does occur it results in an immediate abortion. Huxley's fear of over-population and the control of so many people is an obvious concern which comes to light in Brave New World. Brain-washing is suggested by Aldous Huxley in the form of manipulating individuals, rather than the masses. While brain-washing and sleep-teaching are different (the former being done while the subject is awake, and the latter being done while the subject is asleep), both methods employed by Huxley, act upon the subconscious to obtain the same final results. Prior to Brave New World, Huxley researched the Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov and his experiments on dogs. The Pavlovian dog was subjected to highly stressful conditions, this was done to teach the dog how to react to certain stimuli. The end results of these tests were dogs who had been broken, became mentally insane. Prime human examples are the veterans of the world wars, where victims became incapacitated from intense stress and fear (known as "shell shock"). Huxley suggests that teaching under such stressful conditions can also be considered torture (in its most refined state). Huxley once wrote, "The effectiveness of political and religious propaganda depends upon the methods

Advertising and society Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Advertising and society - Term Paper Example I am able to decipher the true meaning of this advertisement through the insight that is available and the knowledge that I have attained over a period of time. I am sure that whosoever comes across this advertisement will have an impact in a significant way. This is the reason why people like me, my friends and the ones who are near and dear to me appreciate the true value of this advertisement, no matter how many times we watch it. This paper will take a keen look at an advertisement that has had an effect like none other, and pay close attention to the basis of semiotic theory – the signs and symbols used, the essence of social phenomenon, and a basic catharsis that is much required for a deep enough meaning that shall be attained regarding the advertisement under consideration. This advertisement which has been made by Japan Ad Council basically outlines how well The Children’s Foundation needs assistance on the part of just about everyone. The message in this adver tisement is very loud and if only one can understand what is being said, which is revealed in the ending; then the implied essence is clearly transmitted to the intended audiences of this advertisement. The need is to know where this advertisement is creating the ‘wow’ factor within the people and to what proportions because the ending reveals quite a revelation without a doubt. The empathy element seems to be present within this advertisement so that the viewers can feel for the children who are undergoing differential treatments at the hands of the authorities, and more specifically the school authorities. The empathy element is also predominantly strong since a young one is being denied the right to get educated in his own righteous way. Merely the fact that he is different from others does not give the people the license or tag a child as mentally unsuitable within the domains of the society. This is something that derives a great deal of value for the people and th e dimensions of the society. The child under discussion is being treated in a very wrong way and this has a major say in the make-up of this advertisement. The intended message is coming out loud which is much required. The people who will watch this advertisement again and again will feel that its storyline actually remarks their own life journey. They are doing much the same thing because they are not giving the young ones a chance to explore their entireties and reveal what is hidden within them to the maximum possible levels. Now is the time to touch base with the children so that they can become valuable citizens of this world and contribute with their respective talents, skills and abilities that they possess within their folds. However, this is always easier said than actually implemented within the related settings and it is a good idea to find out where the wrongs are coming into the fray and how these could be turned into the positives that are direly needed. As far as the semiotic theory is concerned, there is a pertinent need to find out where the message is making its way through and how the intended audience is being connected. This can easily be seen in the form of an ideology that suggests the assumption of empathy which works to good measure whenever children are used in an advertisement. The children premise is being correctly pointed out because it touches upon quite a few areas which are deemed as necessary to transmit the message in a fair enough manner. The semiotic theory easily mentions how planned a child was in his own thinking regimes, and how he was able to transmit this message through his drawings. The bigger picture could not be envisaged by the elders yet he was able to draw it somehow or the other, in a

Cross Cultural Issues in International Business Essay

Cross Cultural Issues in International Business - Essay Example The parent company is Roll-Royce cars, but it produces both cars and motorcycle. Initially the company engaged in the manufacture of fast cars such as the formula one sports car and later engaged in the production of fancy cars. The production and demand for the BMW cars has been increasing over the last decade as a result of the increasing demand on the fancy cars as a result of the changes in the consumer market. The expansion of the company to Brazil and other country has been affected by the financial crisis witnessed in the 2008, which affected the sales of fancy cars due to decline in revenues and personal wealth. The 2008 was a notable year for the company due to the success achieved in Formula One competition thus, improving the brand visibility (Ferrell and Hartline, 2010). The company targets the high end market associated with quality, style and performance of the product. Internationalization and cultural practices influence the operation of business essentially making th em vital in the process of business expansion and acquisition. Different countries have a different approach to issues in business and marketing. The culture of the countries differs significantly especially when interested in venturing into countries in the Latin America. The historical and socio-cultural difference must be factored in during the process, to facilitate the faster understanding of the negotiation, thus, making it possible for a win -win solution. The key to successful communication between different cultures is knowledge. Experiences of Growing up in a Single-parent Family vs. a Dual-parent Essay

Experiences of Growing up in a Single-parent Family vs. a Dual-parent Family - Essay Example Usually when a child is brought up by a mother alone then he tends to be a person with weaker self-confidence or sense of security. A child remains deprived of the feeling that he is protected. While if a child is brought up by his father alone then the child lacks sensitivity, he will always have a bit of a more strong stance to things. He will probably lack the feelings of humanity even; he might have a very hard and stiff demeanor and outlook to life. His only focus most probably would be high aspirations and more focus would be on material things and success. Therefore, to create a proper balance in the life of a child it is necessary for a child to have his father and as well as his mother to support him throughout his life. It is generally assumed that children living with single parents have a more bolder and mature outlook to life, while the ones living with both the parents usually are the ones who have a milder perspective to life and look at things with a bit more innocenc e. I wanted to gain an insight as to fact that people since time beyond have emphasized, that both parents are necessary for the child to grow as healthy, normal and a productive person. It has been seen that single mothers have been looked down upon by the society despite the fact that they work so hard to bring up their children. I had designed a single questionnaire which I utilized for all participants. There are a total of 6 participants and each of them were given ample time to think and respond. This way also any bias that might come up was reduced as people had no time pressure. I had designed the questionnaire in a very simple way, it had ten questions. In the first question it was asked whether the child lives in a single family or a dual parent family. The responses were mixed; my sample contained a better of international students I felt it might influence the answers I had. Four out of the six respondents had grown up in the dual family outfit. This means that they had both of their parents with them when they were growing. When I asked, â€Å"Whether they believed that for a child to grow up in dual family the presence of both the parents was necessary, 5 out of six respondents said, that if the child didn’t have both the parents to tuck him in bed then he is not considered to be living in a dual parent family. Kenny said, â€Å"Parents can live apart and even then raise their child as a child belonging to a dual parent family†. Laki, who had grown up in a single parent family like Kenny also said, â€Å"if the both the parents are not living together then the child does not belong to dual parent family†. I then asked, â€Å"When a child lives in single parent family, he then gets to spend some fun time with both the parents separately?†, the respondents were asked what do they think of this arrangement, Noi and others said, â€Å"They feel that child will not label that time as the quality time, and will have quite a lot of issues with adjustments.† Kenny, who himself is from a single family very explicitly said; â€Å"Such a child will be very confused and prone to have mood tantrums more often than the normal kids. The child will be divided and there will always be an aura of confusion about him†. When I asked who they felt would be the most suitable choice as a parent of the single family for the child?, amazingly except Kenny, who felt that whichever parent â€Å"qualifies† more to keep the child he or she should keep it. The rest all believed that a mother is more understanding and caring, therefore the child should stay with the mother. Xi Sun said, â€Å"

In the light of these suggestions, management makes future plans. The duties of each level are clear and they know what their responsibilities are. But the decision making could be slow because they have to get approval from each level. Management got more salary than the labor so this organisation requires more money than the flat structure. It is a formal organisation where everything is planned out and co ordinate. (2.3) Environmental Factors (2.3) External Factors: Government: Government is playing a crucial role by imposing some limitations in relation to hygiene and health of public. Latest technology has been introduced in the market day by day. By buying new technology, it can attract more customers. Competitors use lot of tactics to sell their products which may result in the loss of its customers for example T.V. and online advertisements, but it is the achievement of this organization that it has a strong hold on its competitors by providing best customers service and fresh food always. (2.3)Internal Factors (2.3) Findings: Training: Training is a key element to improve the skills of the employees. Customer service, checkout, health and safety, hygienic, etc are couple examples of training provide in this organization which can effect the future of employees who wants to work in food industry. Nandos help churches and schools by giving them money. It spent a fair amount for the re-settlement of Christchurch. Planning and Control (2.4) Findings: General Manager is responsible for strategic planning and allocation of tasks to the employees. He examined whether the plan is implemented accurately. One of the most important parts of an organization is planning and controls the system. It is impossible to achieve the goals of an organization without planning. Finances: The Finances of the organisation are controlled by David Niven (CEO). Here they decide, how much money, they have to spend in which area. They make decisions that how much stack they should be need and how many staff members they should be hire. It also makes plan that how much and where it is going to spend money for the next year. Financial standards of the organization determine by the results of last year. Its main functions are to decide that what kind food they should be made and distribute to the customers, how communication should be develop within the employees. Although some conflicts happened among workers, these are solved very quickly by the management. (2.5) Team Structures and Dynamics (2.5a) Findings: In any organization, company, work place community groups and sports all use teams to accomplish goals. The dynamics of teams determine if these goals will be met in an efficient manner. Team Formation: Teams are formed here according to vertical dimension. Top management, middle management and crew members work together like a team. But exchange of information and suggestion will continue among top to lower management on monthly basis. Activity: As no formal team is exist here and same level employees considers as a team. Everyone is responsible for his job at the same time they keep their social responsibility. Performance: Performance is the key to success. As every individual has different kind of abilities so they are doing their job according to their abilities. You can find that one is slow, one is fast one is interested and someone is not. These things have great influence on performance of the workers. Employees get promotion here on behalf of their interest and good performance. Evaluation: Manager walks around to watch the performance of the workers by watching cameras, by taking assessments they use to get up-to-date information about employees performance. 2.5(b) Analysis: Working with team can actually boost everyones interest on their work place. Working in a team has value in many ways .You can share your ideas with others and accept others point of views. The same thing is happen in Nandos. The process of learning becomes quicker and faster .These are the reasons, you can rarely find a worker here at the same level of his job more than two years. If some problem occur at work place and a team try to solve it. There are more chances that problem will solve very soon. As a team you have more time to go deep to the issue and you can find out a better solution. (2.6) Leadership (2.6) Findings: In Nandos restaurant the opportunity of a leader is lead by Mrs. Tanu Reet Virk (Store manager). Motivation of the workers working in the store is done by the Store manager itself she appreciates the work of the employees give feed backs to the owner Mr. Raman Kalidas and then he describes the rewards to the employees. The rewards mainly include incentives and employer of the month. Store manger also have a positive approach towards their customers, they provide a 10% off to the people working at the Highbury Mall and a 40% off to the employees of Nandos. It doesnt mean he simply gives the orders to his workers but he calls for monthly meeting and appreciate the suggestion of their workers. Nandos has introduced five level of leadership. There are five manager in the organization and every Manager is a leader in his area. General Manager delegate tasks to other managers. Assistant manager give assistant to general manager .Restaurant manager delegate tasks to crew members. But the best leader is one who develop a pleasant environment within the organization Motivation: Employees are motivated here in many ways. The first thing is that employees got train to do their job. They dont feel rush during working hours. They are also motivated because they think; they will get enough training here for their future success. One way of motivation is that manager walks around during work time and appreciates the performance of the workers. If he observes that someone is doing very well, he offers him free meal in break time. At the end of the month, he also announces the employee of the month. Delegation: No organization can ignore the importance of delegation of tasks. It enables the managers to do their job on time. The workers get motivated do their job more effectively. It has developed the work power of the employees and has made it possible for the leader to achieve their targets. (Kalidaas)

Hunters in the Snow by Tobias Wolff :: Tobias Wolff

Is society too egotistical? In Hunters in the Snow, Tobias Wolfe gives an illustration of the selfishness and self-centeredness of humankind through the actions of his characters. The story opens up with three friends going on their habitual hunting routine; their names are Frank, Kenny, and Tub. In the course of the story, there are several moments of tension and arguments that, in essence, exposes the faults of each man: they are all narcissistic. Through his writing in Hunters in the Snow, Wolfe is conveying that the ultimate fault of mankind is egotism and the lack of consideration given to others. For the duration of the story, there are several occurrences which exemplify insensitive as well as self-important mind-sets. Kenny, for instance, does not care about others around him; he is exceedingly self-absorbed. In one part, for instance, he jokingly yet dangerously runs Tub off the road with his vehicle. By doing so, Kenny is showing a careless side; a side that is neither concerned about hurting others nor himself. In his view, his entertainment comes before anything else; hence, injuring Tub was never a consideration. In addition, he also mercilessly taunts Tub about his weight when Kenny knows that it is both a touchy and upsetting subject matter for Tub. Frank, too, is also very self-centered since he is willing to leave his wife for their fifteen year old babysitter, who is barely half-way done with high school. The third main character, Tub, is also quite narcissistic because he becomes immensely defensive when it comes to his weight since he allows Kenny’s mock to offend him; therefore, Tub is egotistical given that he is fixated with his image. As the story, Hunters in the Snow, progresses, the egotistical behaviors of the characters become even more apparent given the lack of sympathy when Kenny is gravely injured. Both Tub and Frank, for example, do not react as most friends would; as moral and compassionate friends would. Surprisingly, Tub, the individual who shoots Kenny in self-defense, shows neither guilt nor regret for his action as he watches his hunting companion collapse in pain. Tub as well as Frank pays no heed to Kenny’s distress as he lies in excruciating pain; basically, neither man shows a degree of remorse for their friend’s pain. For instance, both men are in no rush to transport Kenny to the hospital since they decide to stop at a tavern to get warm and leave Kenny in the truck in utter anguish.

Positive Impact of Internet on Internet Essay

E-government, based on The World Bank definition is â€Å"the use of information technology by government offices for better services to people, business and to facilitate cooperation among government institutions†. The use of E-government has a prospect of empowering the society through public access to information resources available. (Krisna Sen, 2005) For example, a number of American and European sites feature extensive government reports and scientific studies as well as dynamic debates about government and politics. Analogous Indonesian sites usually offer little beyond public relations materials from government agencies and corporations. Krisna Sen, 2005) There are unlimited advantages in the application of e-government. The wide use of e-government provides services and assists in communication between government and communities. It, also, provides services and makes a communication possible between government and business sector. Finally, â€Å"e-government facilitates communication in intergovernmental and among government institutions† (David Lazer, 2007). Basically, it supports the communication between central and local governments and balances their authority. Indonesia could use E-government for other reasons as well. E-government can maintain the government change towards a democratic future. Online E-government services will motivate general public to use internet and transform the society towards an information epoch. There are many factors that, unfortunately, contribute to the low use of Internet. Most of the ICT development has been concentrated in the metropolis centers like Jakarta, Bandung, Bali, and Surabaya, while rural areas lack access to even the most basic telecom infrastructure. Telephone and computer access have gradually increased over the years, but these figures are still very low. Another main aspect contributing to the little use of ICTs is the narrow knowledge and use of English in Indonesia. The national language of Indonesia, a dialect of Malay, is used in education, government, and business. That is why the ability to use the Internet is very limited. However, despite an array of geographical, political, and economic obstacles, progress has been made in the operation and use of the Internet in Indonesia with the support of local communities. Also, a significant steps forward has been made in the distribution of ICT education in the country.

Much Ado About Nothing Essays - Motivation, Psychology, Free Essays

Much Ado About Nothing Essays - Motivation, Psychology, Free Essays Much Ado About Nothing The Power of Opinion Confidence is a key component in the development of success. In order to reach this stability one must be a recipient of encouragement and upholding. This support creates an individuality and esteem for success. For example, in my experiences with females I have come to a vague realization that they feed off of encouragement. It seems like the focus of most of the girls that I know, is to impress. I believe this because when they are complimented, to most it will make their day. This is how I have understood the magnitude that ones approval can make and how it is an essential element of happiness and success. In my life I have had the luxury of having a huge support group to always lift me up. This has bridged a barrier between the things that I can do and those I fail. This confidence is most evident in my basketball tenure because in my opinion basketball requires great confidence. An average basketball player needs to have a security in his skills, body, and team. During a playoff game my junior year, I was predominantly the sixth man or a back to the starter. In the final minutes of the game, we were trailing and my coach put me in the game. I really had no experience in situations like that but somehow I was able to defy my innate anxiety and channel the intensity on to the court. Moments later, I had two steals and sparked a team that was about to dwindle away. We almost won that game. On the bus ride home, I reflected upon the situation and saw how much strength that my coach had given me by simply putting me in. I now place an emphasis on encouraging and making individuals feel my approval. In the summer, I work at a number of basketball camps that are all over the metroplex. During these camps, they usually put me in charge of the first graders. First graders are at the beginning of everything and they really do not comprehend what is going on. However, my job is to encourage and befriend them. This may be the most important job at the camp. In my opinion, this is the best job in the world because I love working with kids who just want to have a good time. For example, we will be playing a game and I will encourage a kid and explain that he was doing great. He will have a priceless sparkle in his eyes. It makes me feel important to know that I can influence and allow these kids to have a great time. Self-esteem is tremendously significant in maintaining happiness and success. This trust focuses on how one receives adoration from another individual. This assurance from the outside creates a domino effect and promotes the levitation of their esteem. In life, there are a number of things that make us fall. However, outside support and trust are two important factors for getting back on our feet. In addition, the importance of giving support is twice as important as receiving. It is a cycle that allows individuals to rise to success.

Technology Business Plan Proposal Essays

Technology Business Plan Proposal Essays Technology Business Plan Proposal Essay Technology Business Plan Proposal Essay Technology Business Plan Proposal Name: Course: Date: Technology Business Plan Proposal Statement of the Problem The entity could use various technology products, which enable remote access to the internet. Such are usually in the form of software, which have advanced settings enabling authenticated access to an entity’s database. The employees usually carry bulk equipment to enable them access the entity’s database without accruing security risks to the database of the organization (Steffen, 2010). Requirements The entity needs a product that would ensure easy and prompt access to the client database. Such should also have security measures, which ensure that the database is secure from malicious software (Jaligama, Goyal, 2011). In addition, there is also need for harmonization in the use of a similar networking system to link all employees and management to one database. Accessibility is an issue for the entity. The users need a product that would ensure easy access into the database to execute the various tasks delegated. In addition, the entity is in need of a secure network, which ensures authenticated access into the database, which in essence enhances security of the database. Technology solutions Various technological solutions are available. The main solution is the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which would ensure the presence of secure and reliable access to the network database. Such products include the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. This could result in the development of an individual network. On the other hand, the entity could also develop a virtual network, which comprises of site-to-site connections of the two entities’ database to result in a single network. Such would save the entity costs of setting up a new network (Steffen, 2010). Project Steps Setting up a Virtual Private Network for the employees would enable them to roam across the various data networks available, given that they currently do not have fixed IP addresses. The new software would enable remote authorized user access to the database via laptops, smartphones using the Microsoft Windows 7 Operating Systems. VPN enables access through the creation of encrypted tunnels between a computer and a VPN server (Feeney Wireless, 2012). The set up process would be initiated by the connection of the two networks to result in a site-to-site connection. The Cisco AnyConnect is considered as a modern day VPN enabling access by using the Datagram Transport Layer Security (DLTS) protocol. DTLS aids in the provision of optimized connections in latency sensitive traffic, such as the Voice over IP (VoIP) and others, such as the TCP based user applications access. This is configured within the system and is defined as Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility solution, which enhances mobile access security for the user (Burton, 2000). (City University of Hong Kong, 2012). Issues and Security risks Remote access networks enable employees to access the entity network from any position in the country or world. The ability to access the network form any position could pose a threat to the entity’s network. Security risks such as privacy invasions are usually common scenarios for employees working outside of the premises of an organization or essentially in remote locations. Computer viruses found on the internet could pose a security threat to the information as well as the entire network of an organization. Infection with viruses could be aimed at disrupting or stealing vital information from the database of the organization. Invasion of privacy is also a crucial issue accrued form the use of VPN by organizations. In addition, the network could be sung operating systems, which are inadequate in terms of security thus enabling access to hackers posing as legitimate users of the VPN. This essentially translates to the loss of vital information for the organization to hackers who are bent on stealing information and disruption of entity operations. Other risks associated with VPN are the presence of unnecessary network traffic. Remote access could result in use of the network for non-work related issues such as entertainment and individual work. This results in reduction of the entity’s bandwidth resulting in wastage of resources. It also reduces the employee productivity as they are focused in non-work related activities. Remote access platforms are usually considered as unreliable in various aspects. The aspect of reliability is because of the use of different lines in comparison to local access networks, which use direct lines making them reliable. Requirements for Security The product comprises of features such as enabling built in web security features and malicious software. Such is possible despite the presence of encryptions and authentication of access. It becomes easy for the employees using remote access, to access sensitive information from the database of the organization, which could be used for individual purposes. A penetration test is essential to establish the reliability in terms of security of a network or computer system. This will assume the use of malicious software from remote access to test the ability of access of the software in the network of the organization. This assumes two approaches, malicious insiders and malicious outsiders (Scarfone, Souppaya, 2007). Malicious outsiders are software, which could be used external of the organization whereas the malicious insiders are softwares used by individuals inside the organization. This is essentially used to evaluate the vulnerabilities present within a system. Such involves active analysis of the system configurations, which if are inadequate, could pose a significant risk to the database of the organization. It also includes analysis of the present software and hardware present in all the network computers and their respective weaknesses and strengths. Other weaknesses such as operational inadequacies could be evaluated and rectified to ensure that the organization develops appropriate countermeasures to curb such weakness of eliminate the weaknesses (Scarfone, Souppaya, 2007). Education fund scholarship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Education fund scholarship - Essay Example Also, the learning experience in college itself imparts great experiences. My first source of inspiration and my happiest memories of childhood are associated with my grandfather. He had lived during Depression and told me stories about his childhood. As a parental figure in my life, he was extremely wise and philosophical. He would read me Shakespeare at bedtime when I was 9 years old and also tutor me in mathematics and science when I got older. He climbed out of extreme poverty by educating himself, became successful and lived the American dream. He was an extraordinary person who demonstrated that education could take you places. He died of cancer when I was 14. I was devastated. I have been living on my own since I was 17. I have come to realize how hard it is to get ahead without a college education. A college education is prerequisite for being successful in today's economy. Unfortunately, higher education is also very expensive. I got my first job as a 1-hour photo processor at 16 (during 1990-1993), while I was still in high school and I have held a variety of jobs. I worked at Radio Shack when I lived in Tucson AZ and I attended the university of Arizona and Pima community college (1994-1996). I volunteered on weekends at the Tucson Humane society in 1995. I cleaned cages, aided in the grooming of the animals and processed adoption applications. In high school, while others saved up for a car, I wanted to save up to buy my first computer. I have always loved to fix things electronic and computers as a kid. That's why I think the course at Devry's I am aiming to take, is a dream come true for me. BS in technical engineering (the development of computer hardware) is so aligned to what I wanted to do, that I am very enthused by it. When I dropped out of school (1996) due to a massive personal setback, and moved to San Francisco, I worked as a waiter and spent my spare time tutoring other people about computers. Now that I am more mature (32 yrs old), I realize what a blessing it is to be able to live in a country that has the resources and values higher education. In the past, (1992-96), when I went to community College, I befriended many older adults, who returned to school to better themselves and become more educated. Now as a "returning" college student myself, I look back and realize how courageous they were to return to school. I am more realistic now, able to imbibe more and my experiences in life have instilled a depth in me that aids faster conceptual understanding. Going back to school is going to be exhilarating, especially studying computers. Most of all, education is going to mean independence for me. I started getting unwell around 3 years ago and started receiving SSI about 2 years ago. I have been getting healthier due to the miracles of modern medicine. Since I have been on SSI, I have been relying on others to help me out with my day-to-day expenses. I believe going back to school and completing a degree will help be more independent and fend for myself. ESSAY #2 describes a situation in your life where your determination and/or perseverance have helped you achieve a goal. (600-word max) College can pose financial, academic and cultural challenges for students. Students who are most adept at facing challenges often have the greatest determination to succeed. We want to know about an experience in your life that

Feedback Loops Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Feedback Loops - Assignment Example Kane (2010) argues that reinforcing loops speeds up the pace of the system as opposed to the initial pace. Feedback in the Air Force will involve the members of staff in decision making, as growth of a system does not occur without application of an effort. In the Air Force as well, balancing loops is important since if the effect dampens, there is need to motivate the staff towards reviving the organization’s set policies. The organization being complex needs to have responses to the feedbacks given. In regard to organizational strategy, feedback loops is of benefit since the organization will have a better chance of steering towards the present. Of essence, the vision and mission of the organization will only be effected through clear communication with the staff, which is only possible through feedback loops (Kane, 2010). Balancing the feedback loops will indeed make the work easier for prospective managers, and in our case, top executives in Air
