The phrase is too often used by the hipsters of today in the United States to make excuses for their dumb mistakes. The phrase will never catch on and be used ubiquitously by the American people – or other nationalities, either – because it is cumbersome to say and even harder to care about and remember. To the ordinary person, it sounds like some frozen yogurt brand nobody wants to try, or some variation of the color yellow. But the acronym has good intentions. â€Å"You Only Live Once† reminds one of a hopeful youth, of seeing and wanting the best in life, of seizing the day because tomorrow is not promised – nor is even the next moment. Nonetheless, the wrong people seem to be using the term. They are the slackers who don’t take blame for their impulsive, risky decisions, and then when the problems arise from the decisions, they blame it on â€Å"You Only Live Once.† But it’s just one more way to enable these kinds of behaviors where judgment is lacked. The True Dangers of the Feared Pandemic Abstract The H5N1 strain of the avian flu is a virus. It has the potential to be very dangerous especially through its ways of transmission. The statistics of the current deaths and possible deaths also show the possible pandemic arising in the near future. However, this topic must be put into perspective and the common belief that it will eradicate our world is rather exaggerated. There is actually a higher chance that the avian flu will not become a deadly killer. Still, there are many possibilities and no one can be completely sure of the outcome. The H5N1 Virus Avian flu is probably one of the most feared possible outbreaks. The H5N1 strain is the particular strain in question. If this strain mutates, allowing for easy human to human transmission, there is an immense chance for a worldwide pandemic. This pandemic could leave the Earth barren with the possible eradication of humans unless there is a gene that allows a small percent of humans to be resistant (Siegel 33). The H5N1 virus has been the most feared virus because of its likelihood to mutate. The structure of the H5N1 virus is the main reason of its possible mutation. The envelope of the H5N1 virus is comprised of three proteins. Two of them are the hemagglutinin (H) and the neuraminidase (N). The hemagglutinin is the layer used to penetrate the host cell. It has receptors that bind to cells, allowing it to open and infiltrate the host cells. The receptors are very specific to the receptors on the cells to which it binds. This is the reason that viruses with H5N1 Dangers 2 the H5 subtype have not been able to transmit from human to human very easily. The iconic American tank of World War II, the M4 Sherman was employed in all theaters of the conflict by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, as well as most Allied nations. Utilizing superior tactics and working in conjunction with tank destroyers, American armor units were able to overcome this handicap and achieved favorable results on the battlefield. Operations in the Pacific and Later Due to the nature of the war in the Pacific, very few tank battles were fought with the Japanese. As the Japanese seldom used any armor heavier than light tanks, even early Shermans with 75mm guns were able to dominate the battlefield. Following World War II, many Shermans remained in U.S. service and saw action during the Korean War. Replaced by the Patton series of tanks in the 1950s, the Sherman was heavily exported and continued to operate with many of the worlds militaries into the 1970s.

They are wiser and more sophisticated than you know, even though their emotions are still developi ng. They see/hear/experience things you may not want them to. Talk to them. How did  she influence  you to write Crank?  Ã‚  A.   This was my perfect A kid. No problems at all right up until the time she met the wrong guy, who turned her on to drugs. First, I needed to write the book to gain some understanding. It was a personal need that made me start the book. Through the writing process, I gained much insight and it became clear this was a story many people shared. I wanted readers to understand that addiction happens in good homes, too. If it could happen to my daughter, it could happen to anyones daughter. Or son or mother or brother or whatever.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Q.   Glass and Fallout continue the story you started in Crank.   What influenced you to continue writing Krist ina’s story?  A.   I never planned sequels. But Crank resonated with so many, especially because I made it clear it was inspired by my familys story. They wanted to know what happened to Kristina. What most hoped for was that she quit and became the perfect young mom, but that wasnt what happened. In the nonfiction essay collection called Flirtin with the Monster, you stated in your introduction that you wanted to write Crank from Kristinas point of view. How difficult of a task was this and what do you feel you learned from it?A. The story was close behind us when I started Crank. It had been a six-year nightmare, fighting for her and with her. She was inside my head already, so writing from her POV [point of view] wasnt difficult. What I learned, and needed to learn, was that once the addiction kicked into high gear, it was the drug we were dealing with, not my daughter. The monster analogy is accurate. We were dealing with a monster in my daughters skin. Q. How do you determine which topics to write about in your books?A. I receive literally hundreds of messages a day from readers, and many are telling me personal stories. If a topic comes up many times, it means to me its worth exploration. I want to write where my readers live. I know, because I hear it from my readers.Q. Why do you think its important to read about the topics you cover in your books?A. These things--addiction, abuse, thoughts of suicide--touch lives every day, including young lives. Brave New World By Huxley Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World out of fear of society's apparent lack of morals and corrupt behaviour during the roaring twenties. Huxley believed that the future was doomed to a non-individualistic, conformist society, a society void of the family unit, religion and human emotions. Throughout the novel, Huxley predicts many events for the future, most of which concentrate on a morally corrupt society. The most important of these predictions include: greater sexual freedom, over-population, brain-washing/sleep-teaching, and the use of mind altering drugs. Aldous Huxley's Brave New World warns of a possible future dystopia, based on social attitudes and medical advancements of his time. Huxley's future dystopia is created largely by perverted sexual freedoms, which in turn cause corrupt individuals, entirely lacking ethics and morals. Sexual promiscuity appears to be a much more frequent activity now then it was in the Thirties. Critics blame "...the advent of the pill for declining morality and indiscriminate sexual activity." Many believe that each time medicine reduces the risk of unwanted diseases and pregnancies, society, on the whole, will increase its sexual activity. Huxley's prediction of promiscuity is based on his iron law of sexuality: "As political and economic freedom diminishes, sexual freedom tends compensatingly to increase." A current example of Huxley's belief is China. China is the last remaining communist regime, it also suffers from having one fifth of the world's population within its borders. Needless to say, China's large population is a direct result of a very sexually active society. Aldous Huxley's fears of the future caused him to write about sexual freedom and the resulting over-population in Brave New World. Over-population is another problem which is addressed by Huxley, and is the direct result of sexual freedom. The fear which Huxley addresses concerning population control is: "Food supplies cannot grow as fast as people can, and population growth in underdeveloped countries will jeopardize the world order." Simply stated the growing population of earth will consume more than it will be able to produce, unless some form of regulating births can be created. This is an obvious truth today, as millions of people are starving each day. The brave new world that Huxley speaks of, is a warning to mankind concerning its destruction of the laws of nature. For example, marriage is forbidden, as well as, pregnancies, and mothers are non-existent because possible children result in abortion. In Brave New World over-population is solved by society's ability to produce as many or as few humans as are necessary to keep the population at equilibrium. The solution is test-tube babies or "bottled babies" as they are referred to in the book. Effective birth control of such a large population is difficult to achieve, especially in a society where people are encouraged to be sexually active with numerous partners. Today, the world is facing over-population head on, with mixed results. Abortions are not readily accepted by most, and birth control in third world countries is virtually impossible. Huxley realizes the problem with mass birth control, and solves it by making seventy percent of the female population sterile, while only thirty percent of the women remain fertile. By leaving thirty percent of the women fertile, Huxley is able to show that even though birth control on a large scale is difficult, it is possible to achieve. Through the religious use of contraceptives, pregnancies rarely occur, however, when a pregnancy does occur it results in an immediate abortion. Huxley's fear of over-population and the control of so many people is an obvious concern which comes to light in Brave New World. Brain-washing is suggested by Aldous Huxley in the form of manipulating individuals, rather than the masses. While brain-washing and sleep-teaching are different (the former being done while the subject is awake, and the latter being done while the subject is asleep), both methods employed by Huxley, act upon the subconscious to obtain the same final results. Prior to Brave New World, Huxley researched the Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov and his experiments on dogs. The Pavlovian dog was subjected to highly stressful conditions, this was done to teach the dog how to react to certain stimuli. The end results of these tests were dogs who had been broken, became mentally insane. Prime human examples are the veterans of the world wars, where victims became incapacitated from intense stress and fear (known as "shell shock").
